FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – To help vulnerable populations, Debt.com and HELPS Nonprofit Law Firm have come together to offer free assessments and guidance. For more than a decade, there has been a sharp increase in debt held by older Americans. Two in five of these adults also have a disability, which not only puts their financial security at risk, but also makes them an easy target for predatory debt collection practices.

Debt.com’s helpline connects people with the professionals at HELPS who can answer questions, recommend resources, and provide vital information.

“Not every person struggling with debt has the same needs,” says Eric W. Olsen, Attorney and Executive Director of HELPS Nonprofit Law Firm. “Recognizing this fact, HELPS and Debt.com have formed a partnership to assist lower-income senior citizens, veterans and legally disabled persons. We are thankful to Debt.com for the opportunity to reach more people in need of its services.”

Debt.com’s mission is to help Americans find the best debt solution for their unique needs. In the case of senior citizens and the disabled, handling debt can be especially difficult when debt collectors threaten to take what little they have in social security, pension, or disability income.

“Debt.com has reported on the rising trend of seniors in debt, and it’s frightening,” says Debt.com President, Don Silvestri. “Because senior citizens are now more likely to be in debt, they are also more likely to be exploited for that debt.  Debt.com recognizes that a variety of problems exist, and we are happy to partner with HELPS to support people who feel powerless and help them regain their peace of mind.”

The partnership will help seniors and disabled persons get low-cost legal representation when dealing with debt collectors while they also get matched with the best debt solutions for their situation. Consumers can call the hotline now at (844) 591-6633.
