Sometimes, doing it for love isn’t enough. Sometimes you do it for the money.
No, not marriage. Your career! Glassdoor has ranked the best jobs in America and while it’s not surprising physicians got the highest-paying top spot — averaging more than $187,000 a year — you might be surprised how many job openings there are. More than 7,000 nationwide.
If that’s not so great to you, try becoming a nurse practitioner. They have the 14th-highest salaries in the country, raking in more than $104,000 a year, but there are more than 12,000 openings. You don’t need to be on the coasts to find a spot, either. Indianapolis and Phoenix are some of the hottest cities hiring nurse practitioners right now.
Medical-related jobs are sizzling hot right now. Those two jobs have a combined openings total of more than 20,000 positions, and there are even more health care-related ones. Pharmacy managers took the second-highest paid spot, with nearly $150,000 annually, while medical science liaisons were fourth, with more than $132,000 a year. Pharmacists rounded out the top 5, averaging just a bit over $125,000. Combined, there are more than 8,000 openings. If you need a job or a career change, head to health care. They need you.
Not into health care? That’s OK
Maybe you can’t afford to commit to a job in health care, even if you know it’ll pay off later. What if you don’t have the cash to go back to school or the time to take away from your family? Thankfully, there are other job openings that you can pick up as a freelancer or contractor for your side-hustle.
CareerCast says independent contract work jumped from 12 percent in 2004 to 18 percent in 2014. As more positions head to work on a contract basis, you could get in on the action without ever leaving your home.
You can pull in six figures if you’ve got the talent. Software engineers make an average of $101,000 a year. Management analysts and occupational therapists command more than $80,000 annually. Web developers, accountants, and multimedia artists can make more than $60,000 a year.
Depending on your working style, you may be in the wrong profession. CareerBuilder says there are certain jobs for certain people, and those that consider themselves “persuaders” could make the move into a higher-paying gig.
“If you’re competitive, if you love the thrill of the hunt, if you were the kid who could convince your parents to get a dog —you probably have some strong persuasive genes,” says Rob Sentz, chief innovation officer of Emsi — a group that teamed up with CareerBuilder for the project. “Fortunately, there are many jobs where this ability is key.”
Medical and health service managers make the list, with annual salaries in the $76,000-$123,000 range. But it’s operation managers — those that form policies and plan business operations — that make up the 11th-largest working group in the country. They’re earning $68,000-$151,000 a year.
Information technology managers are seeing a huge growth in hiring — 18 percent — since 2011. If you’ve got the skills, you could rake in anywhere from $106,000-$167,000 a year. Among other jobs on the persuaders job list: financial managers, sales managers, personal finance advisors, construction managers, sales representatives for technical products, administrative service managers, and marketing managers.
