1. Can You Be Thankful For Debt?

Six Figures Under — During the Thanksgiving season people usually try their best to be thankful for what they have. This blogger says it’s not hard to be thankful “for the good things in our lives.” But being thankful for the bad things in our lives “requires more thought and builds more character…” She thinks “finding the silver lining” even during difficult times makes us appreciate the good times.

I think she’s trying to provide some perspective. I say that because she uses the example of two little girls in a concentration camp being thankful they could keep their Bible hidden from the guards. As far as being thankful for debt, she says her debt “means her husband got a great education.” Debt also educated both of them on financial issues. What do you think? Are you thankful for your debt?

2. Birkin Bags are Stupid. Period.

Club Thrifty — This blogger admits to being a fan of Real Housewives. She “loves those bitches.” But then she got confused when the characters started discussing Birkin bags — so she Googled them and found out they are handbags that cost in the $20,000 to $50,000 range.

Her subsequent rant is fun to read. Because in her opinion (as a Kohl’s shopper) handbags are handbags, not “something more than a diaper, tampon and wallet holder.” Bravo.

3. 5 Ways to Avoid Stress Spending

Saving Money in Your Twenties — After graduating college this blogger lived in terrible conditions. She was stressed and “often found myself wandering the aisles of Target, buying stuff just because it made me feel slightly better about life.” Recently she received a call from a friend who was doing the same thing, because she was stressed about a different situation. That gave her the idea for this blog.

She has some interesting tips: Buy some upscale coffee grounds, creamer and whip cream and make a special  coffee concoction at home. Apparently she’s got a weak spot for coffee, but her point seems to be it’s better to make one worthwhile expensive purchase than a lot of semi-expensive ones. Her best advice is taking some “me time” each day — “go for a walk, read a book, watch trashy TV, paint your nails…” Unwind and get the stress out.

4. Get Fit on a Budget: My Frugal Fitness Tips

Savvy with Saving — No fitness fanatic here, Savvy with Savings confesses “I hate working out with a passion.” Sounds like a lot of people. And the reasons seem mostly the same, too. There’s not enough time in the day, it’s boring, lonely, and it’s expensive. It’s also painful — but there’s no help for that.

Her advice helps with all of those excuses. No time for the gym? “YouTube is your personal trainer.” Bored or lonely? Work out with a buddy (there are virtual buddies on YouTube, too). Too expensive? She says to buy clothes from Target, Forever21, or TJMaxx. She does and “they have all held up pretty well, for under $20 a piece.”

5. Opening the Spending Floodgates

The Broke and Beautiful Life — When you have a few extra dollars coming in it’s tempting to spend them frivolously, laments blogger Stephanie. She’s in theatre and “out on tour with How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical.” She’s earning extra money and has a per diem of $49 a day for food and other things. The excitement of the work, the holidays and the extra dough make her want to “spend, spend, spend.”

She examines the reasons why this urge to splurge is gripping her so tightly. It’s  interesting to read along as she assesses her situation and continually persuades herself not to spend. It’s a good lesson for all of us around the holiday season. Keep your financial goals in mind. Spend some money that you can afford but don’t “open the spending floodgates.”
