The most memorable holiday gifts often costs little or nothing.
When I was dating my wife, her sister and brother didn’t think I was good enough for her. They were probably right, but they had a funny way of showing it: For that first holiday together, they gave me a nose trimmer. Gift-wrapped and everything.
I used it for a year till it broke. (As you can imagine, they didn’t spend on a quality model.) That was in 1997. I don’t remember any other gift I got that year. Or most years since.
Turns out, the gifts I remember most are practical (and practical jokes). And I’m not alone. A poll released two weeks ago reveals, “54 percent of respondents say that usefulness is the most important characteristic of a good holiday gift, and more than 68 percent say a bad gift is one that isn’t useful at all.”
That got us wondering…
What’s the most practical gift you ever got? Or even given? Can you beat a nose trimmer?

Last week’s winner
Last week we asked for your best Thanksgiving leftover recipe and got some great suggestions on Facebook. Our favorite came from Betty N…
I make a Turkey Cranberry Wreath that uses crescent roll dough and the filling is turkey, dried cranberries, swiss cheese, celery, walnuts, mayo & dijon, an egg, parsley, a little S & P fashion dough into a round ring, fill with mixed ingredients and bake until golden.
Sounds delicious, Betty — enjoy the gift card.
