Our debt memes

See what we meme?

We want you to have a laugh at the federal government’s expense — and ours.

Recently, the Department of Education meme’d its way into a PR debacle when it promoted its Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Twitter using an image showing Kristen Wiig’s mug from the movie Bridesmaids.

The image read, “Help me. I’m poor.”

Doh! The gaffe had a lot of people offended, saying it was picking on poor people or that it was suggesting everybody who applies for aid is poor.

Well, the tweet was taken down, but it got us thinking. We came up with a few memes of our own, and we saw Slate.com had the same idea. Now we want to see yours, too — and we might pay you for it! One lucky, funny winner gets $100!

Hit us up on Facebook or Twitter with your own meme about student loans or credit card debt. It doesn’t have to be college-related, just a debt meme. If yours is voted the best, you’ll win $100. Submissions close Tuesday, July 15.

How to make a meme

You don’t need to be a Photoshop wizard to make silly memes — we figured it out, after all. You’ll spend longer coming up with something clever than putting it together. Just use one of these sites…
